Cohoes, NY– Residents are invited to the Cohoes Public Library on Saturday, January 4, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to meet with incoming Mayor Bill Keeler, share ideas about how to move the city forward; participate in a Census job fair and information session; offer suggestions about celebrating the city’s 150th anniversary; and learn about exciting opportunities and important programs of the library and other community groups. “I want to hear people’s ideas, their concerns, and their hopes for our City. We also need to jumpstart planning for the Census count and the City’s 150th anniversary celebrations. That requires engaging everyone – our churches, schools, businesses, and civic & community groups -in every neighborhood. Community input and involvement is essential for us to make substantial and sustainable progress in Cohoes,” Keeler said.

Get Involved in Community Activities
Community groups including Friends of the Library, Spindle City Historic Society, Cohoes High Alumni Association, and Choose Cohoes for Art will be on hand to provide input and to share information about their activities and programs.

Explore Library Programs
Saturday’s event also is an opportunity for residents to get a library card and to learn about program offerings at the Cohoes Public Library. Book clubs, the Beauknitters, and other library groups will be available to talk with residents. The Library will host a special Census-focused storytime program for children up to 5 years old and their older siblings, which will begin at 11:30 a.m.. In addition, the Library will have Census-related activities and crafts for older children to enjoy. “Reading is so important to spark a child’s imagination; to help them learn and grow. I encourage parents and grandparents to bring their children to see and explore their library, and for everyone to get a library card if they don’t yet have one,” Keeler said.

Apply at the Census Job Fair & Information Session
The day’s events also will include a Census job fair and information session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., hosted by New York State Assemblymember John T. McDonald III and Mayor Keeler. Census officials will be on hand to answer questions about job opportunities, help people apply for jobs, and provide general information about the 2020 Census. There also will be Census learning activities for children. Assemblymember John T. McDonald III said, “With the 2020 Census right around the corner, we need to make sure every New Yorker is counted. Census jobs offer flexible hours and competitive pay rates. These positions provide the opportunity to earn extra income while helping the community.”
