Summer Read 2018 – Sign up begins going on now!

LIBRARIES ROCK!

Cohoes Public Library is offering its annual Summer Reading Celebration during July and August, and participation is free and open to all ages – you too, parents! Come in to the Library and sign up for Summer Read. Pledge to read over the summer, keep track of your progress, and come and enjoy our free Summer Programs – including a great party at the end of the summer to celebrate your accomplishments!

As part of our Summer Reading Celebration the Cohoes Public Library is offering a number of free programs. Each program starts at 11:30am each Thursday between July 12th and August 23rd.

Programs include:

The Ancient Art of Fish Printing (Gyotaku): July 12th at 11:30am Kids will learn the ancient art of “Gyotaku”, while creating an impression of a (rubber) fish on paper or fabric using paints. Suggested: Ages 8 and up. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

Let’s Rock:  Thursday, July 19th at 11:30am Children will learn about sound while experimenting with various instruments, and designing one of their own. Suggested: grades 3-5. https://www.cmost.org/

Life on the Erie Canal: Thursday, August 2nd at 11:30amLearn about the engineering challenges in this exciting hands-on program exploring the history and technology of the Erie Canal. Suggested: grades 3-5. https://www.cmost.org/

Animal Builders: Thursday, August 9th at 11:30am From beavers to birds to bugs, animals build some amazing things! In this program we’ll learn about the ways animal architects design and build their homes, including a close-up look at real bird nests, cocoons, and more. Basic Drawing for Beginners – Anime & ComicBook Styled Art with Penelope Barbalios: Thursday, August 16th at 11:30am Join Ms. Barbalios for a Comic book themed drawing workshop. Please join us at the Cohoes Public Library on June 18th at 6pm for a public meeting with District Attorney P. David Soares to discuss marijuana laws.

 

District Attorney P. David Soares will be holding a series of public meetings this summer to discuss marijuana laws with Communities in Albany County.

These meetings will give residents of Albany County an opportunity to ask questions and discuss public safety concerns about marijuana legalization, and the future of marijuana laws and prosecution. In addition to the public meetings, Albany County residents are also invited to take an online survey to share opinions on the topic.

Coming up on June 1st at 1pm at the Library, Johanna Shogan will be here to talk about the Van Schaick Mansion, and how it played a crucial role in the revolutionary war. Hear some intriguing historical stories about the Mansion and take a virtual tour of the House that helped secure our freedom.
