One woman’s journey alone into the Himalayan Mountains of Northern India and her experience of the Dalai Lama and some of the more than 17,000 Tibetan refugee children who live in India. Her power point presentation will chronicle that journey of culture shock, the difficulties of traveling in India, beauty, tragedy and always the unexpected. She will speak of the lives of the Tibetan children and why she has returned repeatedly over the past 5 years. She now spends 3-4 months each year working at the Tibetan Children’s Village.

Nancy Corliss is a retired teacher who initially went to India because she was afraid of just about everything. Coming to know Tibetan children who have lost their country, their homes and in many cases their families has helped her access courage for her own life. She continues to be profoundly affected by these experiences.

Cohoes Public Library presents FREE workshops in Memoir Writing : “Memoir and Poetry: Writing from the Inside out”

When: APRIL 12, APRIL 26, MAY 10, & MAY 24 @ 6PM

Where: Cohoes Public Library

Have you always wanted to write about your life but didn’t know where to start?

The Cohoes Public Library will conduct a series of four, free workshops in memoir and personal writing in various forms. Marea Gordett, poet and non-fiction writer, will present the 1 ½ hour sessions which are open to the public and scheduled for 6:00 P.M.

In these workshops, writers will transform moments and events of their lives into prose and poetry of witness, memory, or hope. The workshops will introduce techniques such as free writing, guided visualization, and writing about photographs to capture experience in imagery and detailed language. A fifth meeting day is scheduled for a public reading, if writers wish to read their work.

The event is open to the community, and space is limited to 20 participants. No writing experience is necessary, but individuals are encouraged to sign up early by contacting the library to ensure a spot.

This event is funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc. with public funds from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Marea Gordett was on the English faculty of Tufts University and currently is director of Big Mind Learning, an educational firm serving students in the Capital region. Wesleyan University Press issued her book of poems, Freeze Tag, and her writing has won the Pushcart Prize and the “Discovery”/The Nation award. She has been awarded Artist-in-Residence fellowships in three states and is completing a book on her experiences teaching inner-city youth.
